Following the $6.4 billion acquisition of Affiliated Computer Services by Xerox last week, in another business deal for data center management and services, Emerson Electric Company has made a pitch for network equipment technology provider Avocent. The buyout is expected to be around $1.2 billion and completed in January 2010.

Acquiring Avocent will give Emerson an edge in its product portfolio and lead to progress in data center technologies, especially after it had bought data center software provider Aperture earlier.

For Emerson, Avocent's data center management solutions is expected bring to the table combination of hardware, software and embedded technologies in a single platform to monitor, manage and troubleshoot in a data center environment.

" Emerson's power and cooling presence combined with Avocent's technologies and installed base will allow us to offer a more compelling solution to our data center customers' most pressing challenge - energy efficiency," said David N. Farr, Emerson chairman, CEO and president. "It will further our customers' ability to better manage reliability, availability and lifecycle costs through a simple yet comprehensive view of the complete data center physical infrastructure."

Emerson's data center products are a revenue spinner, with the company posting $2.6 billion in earnings for fiscal 2008.

Meanwhile, India's MindTree Consulting, global IT solutions firm, has also announced a deal with Avocent for a suite of remote infrastructure management solutions. This will let MindTree to control its data center operations control from anywhere in the world.

Headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama, Avocent generated sales of $657 million in 2008, with nearly 50 per cent of those revenues coming from outside the United States. It's customers include Yahoo! and Brocade Communications Systems.
