CIOs the world over would have one prime agenda this year with the industry scene shifting toward Cloud Computing and Virtualization. The scenario is such that most enterprises are moving away from traditional on-premise software and hardware to hosted solutions.

A Gartner report has said that CIOs have taken virtualization more seriously and a survey has revealed that they have ranked virtualization as their top area of focus for 2010. Cloud computing and web 2.0 are the other top focus areas.

With this happening, companies are expected to invest less in hardware in the coming year and more in hosted solutions as they continue to deal with recessionary budget constraints.

Revealing details, Gartner group vice president and head Gartner Executive Programs researcher Michael McDonald said that enterprises have aspired to this shift for years, but economic, strategic and technological changes have only recently made it feasible. It has also been found that business process improvement topped a list of business concerns, followed by reducing IT costs. Predictions bank more on the fact that cost-effectiveness will remain an overriding value in IT strategy as money remains tight. By switching over to the cloud, a good number of companies have managed to save money of late. With the scene shifting toward outsourcing purchase and maintenance of hardware to web-based service providers, this is being made effective.
