Davos: With the “run-the-business” cost cut, which had been necessitated by the downturn in the global economy , now fading off, HCL Technologies is gearing up to work with its global customers to help redesign their business.

According to an agency report that quoted HCL Tech chief executive officer Vineet Nayar, HCL Technologies had been aiding customers in the US and Europe reduce the cost of running their businesses when the meltdown was severe.

The phase of cost reduction is now over and the current need is to transform the businesses of these companies. Nayar has been quoted as saying: “We are now going to have customers wanting to change businesses and transform them."

Speaking on the 'Employment Challenge', Nayar said focusing simply on the unemployed is short-sighted. He said that companies need to concentrate more on existing employees and improving their stakes in the business. “Too often corporations tend to exert "autocratic control" until they need workers to make sacrifices," he said, adding that better planning would spur employees to contribute to making businesses more flexible.

Deliberations, in the meantime at Davos, have brought to light the need for policy-makers and business leaders to look at new industries to encourage job growth. Just as the information technology sector produced millions of jobs in the early 2000s, expanding microfinance now has the potential to generate new jobs, it is felt.
